苏州过云楼 | ¼的闲游

"Flânerie," or aimless wandering, observation, and imagination, is known as "liuwan" in Beijing and "dang malu" in Suzhou. In the cultural sphere, the concept of flânerie refers to writers, artists, and intellectuals in 19th-century Paris who strolled around the city, engaging in casual conversations and taking in all that surrounded them, lingering amongst the endless display of street lamps, cobblestones, and shop windows. The popularity of this activity reflected a struggle between refined consumption and laborious work, that were difficult to reconcile. For creators, flânerie is an essential state of being, providing ample daydreams for inspiration.

The seven artists in this exhibition all come from the School of Art of Soochow university. Normally, they attend classes to the sound of bells, carrying the weighty responsibility of educating students and following the precise rhythms of society's demands. This is quite different from the freedom and indulgence that professional artists can enjoy. However, every year during the grueling summer and winter, considered unsuitable seasons for young people to study, these artists are granted the summer and winter breaks to concentrate on their art - totaling approximately ninety days a year. With measured footsteps, they make up the 1/4 of flânerie time indicated on the clock.

Let us take an afternoon in early summer, equipped with a parachute and magnifying glass, and rub shoulders with the city's wanderers in front of a canvas.
