勃拉姆斯特别纪念在两部室内乐珍品中延续。首次出版室内乐作品时，勃拉姆斯才二十啷当。36年后，他决意为这部第一钢琴三重奏另作“新版”。美国钢琴家伊曼纽尔·艾克斯直言，“修订版兼收青年和老年勃拉姆斯的优点，两全其美”。作品开头处，古典主义者勃拉姆斯沉迷于他对歌曲的嗜好，而这恰与古典气质所要求的动机简洁性相得益彰。在尝试为三件、四件和六件乐器写作后，勃氏探索起五件乐器的可能性。此前，F小调钢琴五重奏经历了漫长磨砺，在克拉拉的建议下，作品配置才最终定型。威严、宁静、紧张、不祥、愤怒以及冲入云霄的喜悦，少有室内乐作品能以如此高妙的手法混合多种情绪，而音乐中隐隐透出的一丝“古怪”则是除贝多芬四重奏（尤其作品132之类）之外凤毛麟角的创作力表现。
Our celebration of the 190th birthday of Johannes Brahms continues with another pair of the best from his chamber-music repertoire. Piano Trio No. 1 was the first chamber music Brahms published. Originally sketched when the composer was only 20, the piece was revised as a “New Edition” thirty-six years later. The American pianist Emanuel Ax once commented that “with the revision you get the best of both worlds—Brahms young and old.” Here, Brahms the classicist indulged in his proclivity for song, the very antithesis of the motivic terseness that is intrinsic to classical development. Having wrestled with the implications of writing for ensembles of three, four, and six instruments, Brahms set about composing for five. With some coaxing from Clara Schumann, Piano Quintet in F Minor took its final form after a long journey of exploration: the piece was once a piano duet transformed from its original instrumentation: two violins, a viola, and two cellos, a model probably learnt from Schubert. Few works rival the piece’s masterful mingling of moods: majesty, serenity, tension, foreboding, anger, out-and-out joy, and the kind of eccentricity you hear in it is almost unprecedented except for the Beethoven quartets—maybe like something out of Op. 132.
