Throughout history, the violin family has left its indelible mark on the landscape of Western art music and has long been a vessel for the most intimate expressions of composers’ souls. Historically, the string orchestra often took centre stage in courts and concert halls, whereas small ensembles of variable combinations of instruments were never absent in the private chambers of nobles. In this concert, GU Chen, the concertmaster of Suzhou Symphony Orchestra and one of today’s most sought-after violinists who has performed around the globe, leads the musicians from Suzhou Symphony Orchestra’s string section. Together, they demonstrate the diverse possibilities of the music of the string family, exploring the boundless tapestry of emotions, colours, and narratives woven by the delicate yet commanding, sometimes ethereal, and sometimes deep, human-voice-like timbre of the instrument. Close your eyes and open your ears. Embark on a magical journey in which the virtuosi navigate through intricate compositions that push the boundaries of technique, expression, and emotion.
