Material Thinking: International Contemporary Material Art Biennale is the first international biennial of contemporary art initiated by Tsinghua University. This Biennale accentuates the power of matter in artistic creation and reveals the significance of matter in our daily lives and experiences. Beyond that, the Biennale offers a platformthrough which we are able to contemplate the processes involved in the transformation of physical materials into art media. Various facets of history, life, and society are revealed through such observation, and the exploration of materials reveals a novel perspective on contemporary art.
展览主题“唯物思维”与英文主题Material Thinking相辉映，既体现了“新唯物主义”视角下物质材料的主体性和能动性，也希望将唯物的思维方式和质性的研究方法引入当代材料艺术的探索中。这种“唯物思维”的方式与中国传统文化中的“天人合一” “齐物”等观念不谋而合，艺术家由此在“物我两忘”中完成艺术创作。这种物质与生命一体化的认知方式也升华了我们对作品的物性存在的认知：艺术家以形式开启质料，从而敞开了一个世界，并把我们卷入其中，进入一种“神与物游”之境。
Material Thinkingis the fundamental tenet of the exhibition, which focuses on the subjectivity and dynamism of materials from the perspective of "New Materialism" and introduces qualitative research into the exploration of contemporary material art. Material Thinkingis, in part, inspired by traditional Chinese cultural notions of "the unity of man and nature", and "the equality of all things", etc. Hence, the artist completes the creative process by integrating "self" with matters. The manner of interpretation regarding the integration of matter and life shapes our perception of the physical existence of a work of art: the artist enlightens materials with forms, opening up a world where the minds and imaginations can freely engage with the art objects.
同时，材料语言是一种共通的语言，一旦被赋予具有表现力的艺术形式，就可以打破不同语种的隔阂和观念的樊篱，让平等的沟通与对话成为可能。因而当首届国际当代材料艺术双年展作品征集信息发布后，我们欣喜地收到了来自全球80个国家和地区的两千余件报名作品。国际同行的认同和支持也让我们感到以“材料的视角”和“物的维度”来建构当代艺术的新路径、新理论与新格局的前景与可能。
Meanwhile, the language of materials is a universal language that, once given form through works of art, can dissolve the boundaries between different languages and conceptions, allowing for universal communication and dialogue. Thereby, when the invitation to the 1st International Contemporary Material Art Biennalewas extended, we were thrilled to receive over 2,000 submissions from more than 80 countries and regions. The acknowledgment and support of our colleagues worldwide bolstered our faith and instilled in us confidence to forge new paths, theories, and patterns in contemporary art through "material perspective" and "the dimension of materiality."
南池子美术馆将展出来自23个国家的50余件/组作品，当代材料艺术在与这座古色古香的中式庭院对话中，产生不同的碰撞与交融。我们希望这是一个提出问题的展览，通过园林建筑的空间场域将材料艺术的魅力以最适合的展陈方式呈现给观众，并且吸引更多艺术家、学者参与到我们的事业和讨论中来，不断丰富和积累关于当代材料艺术的成果和理论视野，为当代艺术的发展开启新的空间。
The Nan Chi Zi Art Museum, the Beijing venue for the Biennale, will exhibit approximately 50 pieces/groups of works from 23 countries, with the hope that contemporary material art will showcase a distinctive charm and brilliance in dialogue with this ancient Chinese courtyard.We hope it is an exhibition that provokes thoughts and questioning, inspires more artists and scholars to engage in our pursuits and discussions, incessantly broadens and accumulates achievements and theoretical visions on contemporary material art, and opens up newspacefor the development of contemporary art.
