《罗密欧与朱丽叶》是一个我们耳熟能详的故事，在不同时期的艺术领域都有佳作被创作出来。
埃克托·柏辽兹在第一次接触到莎士比亚的悲剧时，就萌生了根据罗密欧与朱丽叶创作音乐作品的想法，但直到他的的热心支持者传奇人物帕格尼尼慷慨资助的20000法郎，这个作品才得以推动。这部作品是一部戏剧交响曲，它的演出除了交响乐队外，还包含了独唱与合唱。它并不是音乐会形式的歌剧。它的结构庞大，独唱、合唱与乐队表现互为穿插，最后一段有大段的朗诵调与咏叹调。在结构和音乐上，《罗密欧与朱丽叶》受到贝多芬第九交响曲的影响很大，不仅在于独唱和合唱的使用，还在把声乐部分集中在结尾，在管弦乐编配的方面也多有相似之处。这是柏辽兹在创作野心高峰时期的作品，挑战了交响乐团的能力极限，展示出在音乐色彩的尝试还是在个人技术方面的出众才能，它令作曲家获得了巨大的成功。
ROMEO AND JULIET is one of the most familiar stories, with masterpieces being composed in the arts at different times.
The idea for a musical work based on ROMEO AND JULIET was conceived by Hector Berlioz when he first encountered Shakespeare's tragedy, but it was not until a generous grant of 20000 francs from his ardent supporter, the legendary Paganini, that he was able to move forward. This work is a symphonie dramatique, a large-scale choral symphony that is performed with soloists and chorus in addition to the symphony orchestra. It is not an opera in concert form. It has a large structure, with soloists, chorus and orchestra performances interspersed, and large recitatives and arias in the final section. In terms of its structure and music, Berlioz’s ROMÉO ET JULIETTE is heavily influenced by Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, not only in the use of soloists and chorus, but also in the concentration of vocal parts at the end, and in the orchestration. This is a work by Berlioz at the height of his creative ambition, both in terms of his attempts at musical color and his individual virtuosity, which made it a great success for the composer.
