F小调第六弦乐四重奏是门德尔松的非凡力作,暗黑底色与近乎可燃的炽热强度令人叫绝。我们或许对门氏音乐中激情饱满的戏剧性及那一触即发的冲动、紧张情绪习以为常,但在这里,音乐始终有所克制,直至末乐章才彻底引燃烈焰风暴。此曲是门德尔松在悲恸之中为其心爱的妹妹和知音范妮的故去而作。半年后,作曲家本人也一并西去。无论将传记背景与四重奏的抽象内容相关联是否合理,你都无法否认音乐效果:汹涌起伏的苦痛中包裹着一支充满爱的挽歌。要说音乐与个人生活的联系,肖斯塔科维奇C小调第八弦乐四重奏或许是个更令人信服的例子。1960年夏,身在德累斯顿的肖斯塔科维奇把这首他在三天内完成的作品献给“法西斯主义和战争的受害者”。作曲家的个人座右铭主题(DSCH动机)渗入每个乐章,密集的自我引用也值得关注:第一和第五交响曲、第一大提琴协奏曲,甚至《姆岑斯克郡的麦克白夫人》中的咏叹调都在这部冷峻、深沉的四重奏中留下踪迹。

Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor is a dark tour de force, celebrated for its combustible blistering intensity. Throughout Mendelssohn’s work one finds passionate drama and that signature nervous drive, high strung, anxious, and ready to explode. But in this quartet, the last major piece he completed before he died, the mood is unrelentingly sustained across three of the four movements ending with a virtuosic firestorm, a conflagration of musical angst. It is believed that the piece was written after the death of Fanny, the composer’s cherished sister and intellectual soul mate, just a half year before his own demise. Devastated, Mendelssohn composed his final quartet dedicated to her memory. Whether one dares to connect this biographical setting to the abstract music of his string quartet, one cannot deny the musical effect: surging agony enfolding a loving elegy within. Connections with personal life seem more compelling in the case of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor. Written in just three days in the summer of 1960 when the composer was in Dresden, the German city that had been destroyed in 1945 by an Allied firebombing, the piece is dedicated “to the victims of fascism and the war”. Shostakovich uses his personal motto theme, the DSCH motif, which appears in every movement of this quartet. The work is also filled with Shostakovich’s self-references: quotations from his Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 5, Cello Concerto No. 1, and even an aria from his opera LADY MACBETH OF THE MTSENSK DISTRICT.
