在11月11日这天奉上纪念勃拉姆斯诞辰190周年特别系列的首场音乐会并非无心的巧合——是的，勃拉姆斯从未结婚。舒曼去世后，他对克拉拉的爱恋与日俱增，但二人终身维持亲密友人关系。或许，他因为爱着导师的遗孀而感到内疚；或许，他只是无法做出承诺，转而践行他的小提琴家挚友约阿希姆的座右铭：自由但孤独。在两部相隔31年的室内乐佳作中，我们或许能通过聆听作曲家人格深处的声音而得到一丝线索。写于事业末期的B小调弦乐五重奏见证了勃氏创造力的巅峰。这部原为单簧管演奏家米尔菲尔德和约阿希姆弦乐四重奏而写的作品有着暗色调、繁复的声部肌理和动人的歌唱线条——与第二乐章中炫技的“匈牙利”段落和第四乐章中闪现的积极时刻形成鲜明对比。第一号弦乐六重奏是 27岁时的创作。在沉郁凄美的第二乐章中，沙哑的中提琴吟诵匈牙利主题的挽歌，以肃穆的调性铺陈主题与变奏。勃拉姆斯将这个激情饱满的乐章改编成钢琴独奏，并把它献给了克拉拉。
11.11 aka the Single’s Day marks the first concert of our special chamber music series dedicated to the 190th birthday of legend Johannes Brahms. Yes, Brahms never married. After Schumann’s death his passion for Clara grew but they remained close friends for life. Was the guilt he felt for loving a widow of his mentor that holds him back from marrying this woman, clearly the love of his life? Or was Brahms simply unable to commit, choosing to adopt the relationship motto of his closest friend, violinist Josef Joachim: frei aber einsam (free but alone). You may be able to find some clues by hearing out the innermost voice of this man in two gorgeous pieces created thirty-one years apart. Brahms was in the twilight of his career and at the height of his creative powers when he wrote String Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115, originally for the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld and the Joachim String Quartet. The masterwork features dark tonal hues, lush textures, and the most exquisitely beautiful vocal lines of any chamber work ever composed, contrasting with the virtuosic “Hungarian” section of the second movement and an occasional optimistic moment in the fourth movement. Written at the age of 27, the String Sextet No. 1, Op. 18, has a dark and poignantly beautiful second movement in which the husky viola intones a Hungarian-themed lament that gravely marches through a theme and variations. Brahms transcribed this passionate movement for solo piano, dedicating it to Clara the same year he composed the sextet.
